FC United Women bow out of FA Cup following defeat to National League Chester-le-Street Town
'FC United Women’s 2018/19 SSE Women’s FA Cup adventure came to an end on Sunday afternoon after they were beaten 5-0 by Chester-le-Street Town LFC in the First Round.
Despite going in to the break level at 0-0, the fourth tier visitors scored five second half goals to book their place in the Second Round of this year’s competition.
Manager Luke Podmore made one change from the starting XI that overcame Tranmere Rovers LFC 8-2 last weekend, giving defender Emily Marsh her first FC start having appeared for the first time for the Reds in the win, after recovering from injury. She replaced winger Corie Mather in the club’s first ever appearance in the opening round of the national competition.
United may have been the home side but the game was played at AVRO FC’s Vestacare Stadium where there was a poignant atmosphere on Remembrance Sunday, with the two teams observing a minute of silence prior to kick-off along with a rendition of the Last Post.
When the game did get underway, it took up an even start with both teams having opportunities to take an early lead. Captain Kirsty Chambers’ in-swinging corner had to be cleared from under the bar with the visitors finding the side netting of Gemma Jackson’s goal at the other end.
Despite United currently playing their football in the level below the visitors, it was Luke Podmore’s side who held the early initiative. Chambers was again involved seeing her shot glance off the crossbar.
FC had to be alert all afternoon and on 16 minutes Emily Marsh was on-hand to cut out a dangerous looking Chester-le-Street attack, with a last-ditch tackle.
The FA Women’s National League North side then put together a string of chances that the Reds did well to divert from the goal. First, Gemma Jackson produced a smart double save to keep the score level before Kate O’Gara cleared a goal-bound header off the line. Centre-backs Emily Marsh and Fran Davies then produced two huge blocks on dangerous looking attempts, as we approached the half-hour mark in the game.
Having absorbed a spell of pressure, it was the Reds’ turn to get on the front foot as the half came to a close. Determined work from Kate O’Gara saw her intercept a loose pass before winning a United corner that Jess McCarrick’s effort was saved from.
In the closing minutes of the first 45, both Kirsty Chambers and Cara Fields were denied from trying to open the scoring by some good work from the visiting goalkeeper. With that, the two sides went in to the break level on a breezy Autumn afternoon at the Vestacare Stadium.
Both Shaunna Jein and Aimee O’Keeffe were introduced for FCUMW at the break in place of Emily Marsh and Jess McCarrick. It was one of the Reds’ substitutes in O’Keeffe that mounted United’s first effort of the half, but the striker’s high shot was caught by the goalkeeper.
Unfortunately, that was to be FC’s only attacking opportunity before Chester-le-Street Town showed a clinical touch to their finishing, up the other end. A trio of strikes from Elizabeth Thompson-Clark, Nichole Harvey and Jessica Ellison within a seven-minute spell put the visitors firmly in control.
As United looked to recover, Corie Mather became the third and final sub, replacing Kirsty Chambers.
Striker Aimee O’Keeffe again attempted to get United on the board in the closing stages but the goalkeeper was able to parry away for the second time in the half.
Down at the other end of the pitch, Gemma Jackson did her best to keep the visitors’ lead to three with a low save on the rush but her’s and FC’s luck was out just moments later as Chester-le-Street Town grabbed a fourth from a corner, just moments later, as Nichole Harvey scored her second of the game.
The North East side then made it 5-0 in stoppage time, as substitute Lucy Jackman completed the scoring just minutes before referee Yasmin Saeed blew the whistle to end the encounter.
A disappointing result for the Reds in Oldham but one that Luke Podmore’s side can look to bounce back from when they return to league action on Sunday, with a trip to Wigan Athletic LFC.
