FC United drawn at home to Colne in The Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying
FC United will welcome old rivals Colne to Broadhurst Park on Saturday 22 September in The Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying.
Colne are currently second in the Northern Premier League Division One West, which is two steps below FC United. The Lancashire club have made a 100% start to the season with six wins from six, including beating Hyde United 2-0 in the First Round Qualifying on Saturday.
FC United have met Colne four times before and have three wins to one defeat with 16 goals scored and five conceded. The two clubs first played each other in November 2005 in the North West Counties Challenge Cup in a game that was moved to Accrington Stanley to accommodate 2,762 supporters.
Our opponents ran out 2-1 winners with all three goals coming after the 87th minute in a frenetic end to the match. United were captained that day by our now caretaker-manager David Chadwick. Steve Torpey scored a wonderful free-kick in the 90th minute, which looked to have gained us a replay but just seconds later Karl Marginson’s side conceded the winning goal.
FC United’s maverick striker Rory Patterson was sent off, despite having already been substituted, after a bad tempered melee on the touchline. The incident was immortalised with a new line being added to his popular ’The Man With No Name’ terrace chant.
The Reds had to wait until January 2007 to get their revenge in the same competition and they did so with aplomb – winning 4-0 at Colne’s Holt House Stadium. Rob Nugent, Patterson, Stuart Rudd, and Dave Brown got the goals. The match was also remembered for Patterson cheekily standing on the ball with both feet and saluting during open play, thereby creating another new line in his growing chant of adoration.
Two months later, United beat Colne 6-2 in front of 2,456 supporters during a North West Counties Division One match at Gigg Lane and they also won the return fixture 5-1 in April that year as the Reds charged to their second consecutive league title and promotion.
We haven’t encountered Colne for 11 years due to FC United’s rise up the leagues, so we’ll look forward to welcoming them to Broadhurst Park for what should be an entertaining FA Cup match.

On Saturday 22nd September, FC United play Colne of the Evo Stik North (West) Division in the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round at Broadhurst Park kick off 3 pm.
From our early days we have fond memories of games against Colne as we traversed the highways and byways of the North West Counties League. It is a pleasure therefore to welcome them to Broadhurst Park for what will be an intriguing FA Cup match.
We all know how important a successful FA Cup run would be to the club on and off the pitch, so get yourself to that football ground and cheer the lads on!!!
Admission is by payment at the turnstiles. An early turnstile opens at 1.30 pm with another 3 turnstile opening at 2PM.
Before the turnstiles open, admission can be gained via main reception by cash payment of the match admission price.
Admission prices are as follows
£12 Adults,
£7 Concessions
£ 3 under 18s.
RESERVED SEATING IN THE MAIN STAND
Supporters will be able to reserve seats in one block of the Main Stand on a first come first served basis, by calling the FC United office on Friday 21st September on 0161 769 2005. A maximum of 4 seats can be reserved per person. Those who have reserved seating need to collect a wristband from the FC United office accessible through the main reception on the day of the match. These wristbands will only be available until the kick off time of the match.
Board member Paul Howarth will be in the SMRE between 1.30 and 3.00. Although this is not an official board surgery, Paul will be only too happy to answer any questions you may have.
BARS AND FOOD
Due to strict FA rules, together with a private function being held in the Main Stand Function Room after the match, there are some changes to the usual match day food and drink arrangements.
**PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGES TO OUR MATCH DAY BARS OPERATIONS BELOW**
As this match is to be played under FA rules, alcohol will not be allowed to be served in view of the pitch, or be allowed to be taken into the seats, terraces and other standing areas. Supporters will be actively prohibited from taking alcohol into the seats and onto the terracing and other standing areas.
The refurbished bar under the St Mary’s Road End stand will be open from 1.00 and will remain open during and after the match until 6.30pm and will serve the usual range of draught and bottled beers, lager and cider. Pie and peas will also be served.
The Main Stand Function Room will close at half time so that it can be prepared for a private post match function. It will therefore NOT be open after the match, so fans are advised to use of the SMRE Bar instead.
Alcohol will be served in the main Function Room until kick off ONLY, last orders will be 2.30. Hot food together with non-alcoholic drinks will be available before the match and up to half time ONLY.
Before the turnstiles open, access to the Main Stand Function Room is via main reception on production of your match day ticket or by cash payment of the match admission price. After the turnstiles open, entry to the Function Room will be via all turnstiles and then through the seated area of the Main Stand.
The Cask Ale Bar situated under the Main Stand, behind the Paddock, and the pitch side bar between the Main Stand Paddock and the SMRE will unfortunately both be CLOSED for this match. However, the Dry Bar under the Main Stand will be open for hot food and non-alcoholic drinks.
We apologise most sincerely for the nature of these measures which are due to the FA’s strict rules and therefore beyond our control. Normal service will be resumed at our next home league match on 13th October.

Colne Left back Luke Higham made 13 appearances for FCUM during the 2017-18 season. Centre back Chris Lynch scored 3 goals in 41 games for FCUM between 2014 and 2015.

FC United’s first home win of the season put them through to the third-qualifying round of the FA Cup as they overcame a spirited Colne 2-0 at Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
First half goals from Mike Donohue and Kurt Willoughby were enough to give the Reds a victory and a place in Monday’s draw.
Donohue gave United the lead after just two minutes when his beautifully placed header beat Hakan Burton to settle the early nerves that are always there in a cup tie.
The two teams put on a good contest in the first half, with the visitors more than holding their own and creating enough opportunities and dangerous attacks that the men in red needed to stay switched on throughout.
Burton put on a great display in goal for the visitors and had to pull off a string of good saves to deny FC a second during a penalty area scramble midway through the first half.
But the forward line wouldn’t be denied and Kurt Willoughby continued his great goal scoring form this season heading home to double the lead five minutes before the break.
The second half was a little flat with FC not really looking to add to their lead and being comfortable enough at the back to not need to worry about the Colne attacks that came their way.
Brodie Litchfield and Elliot Simoes came on in the second half and both looked to use their opportunity and both went close towards the end of the game, only to be denied by Burton once more.
A first home win, two goals, a clean sheet and a place in the next round of the cup. All in all it wasn’t a bad afternoon’s work for the Reds who will look to take some momentum into next weekends trip to the only team below us in the league, Nuneaton.
