Southport’s origins date back to 1881 and they moved to Haig Avenue in 1905, known then as Southport Central. They joined the Football League as Southport in 1921 and finally lost their status in 1978, being replaced by Wigan Athletic.

Southport became founder members of the new Conference North in 2004–05, and were the league's first Champions, earning promotion back to the newly renamed Conference National.

Head of Development at Haig Avenue is Mark Wright, who played for Southampton, Derby County and Liverpool, winning 45 England caps between 1984 and 1996. Wright was Southport manager between 1999-2001.

This is now FCUM’s worst start to a season after 3 games. The last time FCUM lost 4 successive League games was February 2016 (AFC Telford United (a) 1-5 Alfreton Town (h) 1-3 Bradford PA (a) 1-3 Harrogate Town (a) 0-5)

In September 2015 FCUM Youth played Southport Youth at Broadhurst Park in the FA Youth Cup. The Reds won 6-2 with Sam Baird, Chris Hill and Michael Jones involved and now in the first team squad.

Goalkeepers Iain Turner and Mark Halstead both have Premier League experience. Turner was sent off 9 minutes into his Everton debut against Blackburn Rovers in February 2006 for handling outside his area. Halstead made his debut for Blackpool in a 1-3 defeat to Chelsea at Bloomfield Road in March 2011.

Scott Kay made 43 League appearances for Southport between 2012-14. Joel Logan made 4 appearances for Southport in 2014. Connor McCarthy made 28 appearances for the Sandgrounders in 2014.
